Our zero waste efforts focus on composting, recycling and sustainability education to reduce food and material waste at UT Farm Stand markets and across UHD dining operations. Through hands-on initiatives and student-led projects, our team works to promote waste diversion and encourage sustainable practices.
Market Waste Diversion
Waste diversion efforts at UT Farm Stand markets include collecting data and monitoring waste production across three waste streams: compost, recycling and landfill. This information helps identify waste patterns, uncover opportunities for improvement and promote responsible disposal practices. By prioritizing composting and recycling, these efforts help significantly reduce our landfill contribution.
Sustainable Products
As part of our zero waste efforts, our team creates affordable, sustainable beauty and lifestyle products using simple, sustainably sourced ingredients. These products, including lip balms, lip scrubs, lotions, solid perfumes and soaps, are sold at UT Farm Stand markets as eco-friendly alternatives for everyday use.
Student-Led Projects
Students gain hands-on experience by contributing to zero waste initiatives that support sustainability efforts across our operations. Through practical projects such as managing the Jester Compost Garden, collecting batteries from UHD staff offices for recycling, and executing the Grounds for Grounds coffee ground composting program, students help identify new ways to reduce waste, improve recycling practices and create a more sustainable campus environment.
