Hand Scanner Program

A UT student waves their hand through a hand scanner

Learn more about the hand scanner program, including how to enroll and other frequently asked questions. The hand scanner program allows students, faculty and staff with a UHD meal plan to wave their hand across a turnstile reader for entry instead of tapping their UT ID card after they have enrolled in the program. This optional program offers fast and convenient access through touchless hand scanner turnstiles at J2, Jester City Limits and Kins Dining.

About the Hand Scanner Program

What are the benefits of participating?

The hand scanner program offers fast access to the dining halls without your UT ID card. The program is touchless, convenient and secure. You don’t need to wait in line for the cashier to tap your card, just wave your hand across the hand scan reader and the turnstiles will open automatically for you if you have a valid UHD meal plan and have enrolled in the hand scanner program.

How do the hand scanners work?

Your hand scan is translated into biometric points in the system. These biometric points are connected to your UT EID, which allows you to wave your hand and go, rather than tapping your UT ID card to enter the dining halls for a meal.

Is the hand scanner program mandatory?

No, it is not required to enroll in the hand scanner program if you have a UHD meal plan. UT ID cards may still be used to enter the dining halls at a cashier station, and they are still required when paying for a guest.

Enrollment

Who can enroll in the hand scanner program?

Any UHD meal plan holder (resident unlimited, commuter and faculty/staff Dine In Dollars) can enroll in the hand scanner program.

How do I enroll in the hand scanner program?

Enrollment in the hand scanner program is simple and quick for UHD meal plan holders. First, opt in to participate in the program. Then complete your enrollment in person where our team will guide you to wave your hands through the scanner so you can begin using the turnstiles to enter the dining halls.

Can I use the hand scanner without enrolling in the program?

If you are not enrolled in the hand scanner program, you will not be able to use the turnstiles. If you have a meal plan, you can opt into the program and enroll in person with our team at pop-ups during summer orientation and the start of each term. Enrollment during the fall and spring terms is available in the UHD Registered Dietitians Office in Jester West.

Can I unenroll?

Yes. If you are enrolled in the hand scanner program, you can opt out at any time. If you opt out, you will no longer be able to participate in the program unless you opt in and enroll again.

Dining Hall Access

Do I still need my UT ID for the dining halls?

Your UT ID is required to enroll in the program or pay for a guest. However, once you have enrolled, your UT ID card is not necessary for entering the dining halls for a dine-in meal.

How does access work if I want to use a dining to-go container?

You do not need your UT ID to enter the dining hall if you have the Fill it Forward app. To get your to-go container, you will first need to go to the cashier station to receive a new box. Then you can use the hand scanner turnstile for entry.
