Room Selection begins in June for first-time incoming freshmen students. If you are a returning resident, please click here for information on your housing process.
After you sign and return your housing contract and satisfy your advance payment, you will be able to submit your housing preferences online. Here's what you'll be able to indicate:
- Your building preferences (select five residence halls)
- Your preferences for special living communities
- Your bath preferences, including if you have an interest in a connecting or private bath (subject to availability and at a higher cost)
- Your roommate preference
You can submit your housing preferences at any point in time after you sign and return your housing contract and satisfy your advance payment. If you change your mind after you enter your preferences, you can always log back in and update them. We will use the preferences listed by the student manually assign any student that does not participate in the Room Selection process. Room Selection timeslots are assigned in housing application date order, not in the order housing preferences were submitted, so updating your housing preferences never hinders you.
If you want to share your room with a specific person, you'll need to indicate your roommate preference online. You can search students by their EID or by their Roommate Profile information. Students can submit a roommate request, and once approved, the students will be paired together. The student with the earlier Room Selection timeslot will select the room assignment for both students in the roommate pair.
If you don't have a preferred roommate, that's OK, too. About 40 percent of students decide to go "potluck." You would still choose a room during room selection and place yourself in a room with another student in it. When looking at the room, you will be able to see the profile information of the student already in the room to help with your selection.
If our office assigns your room, we will use your age, classification, major, and profile percentage match to match you with an appropriate student. Please note that supplemental contract holders are unable to request/accept roommate requests.
Students who do not participate in the Room Selection process will be manually assigned based on their preferences and roommate profile matches. These assignments can be found on your housing application portal in early July.
Please note that this does not pertain to the majority of students, and mostly applies to students who receive supplemental contracts or contracts later in the process.
How Room Selection Timeslots Are Made
Room Selection Timeslots are made based on the date on which a housing application is complete; housing applications are complete only after the $50 housing application fee is posted. A timeslot can only be given to students have a completed housing contract.
Applicants who apply early are more likely to be able to select a preferred housing assignment. Since the application for housing opens on August 1, students who wait to apply for housing may not receive their top housing preferences. But, that doesn't mean that applicants who apply late aren't able to live on campus. While housing is not guaranteed, the housing staff works to ensure that we offer housing contracts to as many incoming first time freshman as we can.
